Meral Birel Kahya Introduces “The Beautiful Soul of Cotoni”

Istanbul runs in her veins but her heart belongs to Paris. Born into a line of tailors and couturiers for four generations, Meral grew up with thread spools and richly colored fabrics. “When my mother would go out, I would go into her atelier, flip through the fashion magazines and catch myself dreaming.” It was her happy place, to the sound of needles at work, scissors cutting, fabrics being unrolled…  

 

Just out of adolescence, she went to Paris, enrolled in the ESMOD school, where she obtained a double degree in styling and pattern-making and became passionate about the arithmetic and grammar of fashion: “I quickly understood that the magic of a garment was not only a matter of drawing”. She studied anatomy, architecture and proportions, pattern-making, and cutting. « It’s simple, I wanted to learn everything!”  

 

She was only 22 when she opened her Parisian atelier. “This is where everything happened, where things seemed so easy. Where I could make my way, because only in Paris would an established couturier get a coffee himself and fight tooth and nail to get his brand take off.”  

Soon, the fashion elite became infatuated with this magician who thinks in three dimensions, with this young dressmaker with nimble fingers who knows how to transform the first sketches into masterful pieces, and how to render their wildest dreams with the precision of a geometer. Meral has this rare talent to “see” the garment: “I never work flat. I take my canvas right away, I draw the axes and I place them on the wooden dummy, building in volume what the drawing only suggests”. Her first clients were Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Isabel Marrant, Koji Tatsuno, Junko Shimada, and Hanae Mori, the flamboyant designers of the 80s and 90s when pomp and creativity set French fashion on fire.  

 

She was also, during these magical decades, and always in the shadow, the right hand of her colleague Ece Ege, alias Dice Kayek, the most famous Turkish stylist abroad, with whom she has prepared notably the unique pieces of the exhibition Istanbul Contrast, presented in the most famous museums in the world.
